Process Safety Management (PSM) Engineer

About the role

The Process Safety Management (PSM) Engineer is responsible for implementing and maintaining robust safety systems across upstream oil & gas operations. The role focuses on ensuring safe design, risk mitigation, and compliance with industry standards.

Key responsibilities

• Implement PSM systems and promote a strong safety culture.
• Develop and maintain technical safety documentation such as TSE philosophies, AI‑PS principles and project specifications.
• Provide design support, technical troubleshooting and safety‑focused engineering for upstream facilities.
• Conduct hazard identification (HAZID), HAZOP, LOPA, QRA (PHAST) and CFD analyses.
• Lead emergency preparedness planning, scenario development and major hazard incident investigations.
• Create PSM communication tools (newsletters, posters, videos) to raise awareness.
• Participate in safety‑critical element identification and performance‑standard development.

Required profile

• B.Sc. in Mechanical, Metallurgical, Chemical, Petroleum, Electrical, Instrument Engineering or equivalent.
• Minimum 15 years of experience within an oil & gas operating company.
• Proven expertise in technical safety project documentation, leak‑path reduction, hazardous‑area and toxic‑facility classification, fire‑protection design and ALARP demonstration.
• Strong knowledge of safe work practices (PTW, JSA, Management of Change) and human‑factors considerations.

Required skills

• Hazard analysis methods: HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA.
• Quantitative Risk Assessment using PHAST.
• Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling.
• Failure Tree Analysis (FTA), Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA), Event Tree Analysis (ETA).
• ALARP demonstration, Technical Pre‑Start‑Up Safety Review (PSSR) and PHSER.
• Permit‑to‑Work (PTW), Job Safety Analysis (JSA), Management of Change.
• Fire‑protection design, hazardous‑area classification, toxic‑facility classification, flare radiation/toxic/noise assessment.
• Alarm management and hazardous‑material management.
