Director, Centre for Teaching & Learning (CTL)

About the role

American International University (AIU), a private institution in Kuwait founded in 2019, is seeking a Director for its newly established Centre for Teaching & Learning (CTL). The CTL is the university's hub for teaching excellence, faculty development and learning innovation, operating under the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and serving all five schools and the Foundation Programme. The Director is the founding leader, responsible for building the Centre's programmes, culture, partnerships and reputation.

Key responsibilities

• Faculty professional development: design and deliver a structured programme covering evidence-based pedagogy, inclusive teaching, active learning, hybrid and online instruction, AI in teaching, assessment design and academic writing; lead the New Faculty Induction Programme, establish Faculty Learning Communities, coordinate peer observation, provide individual consultations, and develop a teaching certification pathway aligned with the UK Professional Standards Framework.
• Instructional design and educational technology: support course design across modalities, advance online and hybrid course design, coordinate with the CTO on technology adoption, develop a policy on Generative AI in teaching, and maintain the CTL Knowledge Repository.
• SLO assessment: train faculty in SLO/PLO design and close-the-loop documentation, support the Annual Institutional Effectiveness Report, maintain participation records, and publish an annual Teaching & Learning Impact Report.
• Grant administration: administer the Teaching & Learning Grant Programme, mentor grant recipients, organise the annual Teaching & Learning Forum, maintain the CTL website and newsletter, seek external funding, and promote interdisciplinary projects.
• Strategic leadership: advise the VPAA, Deans and Faculty Council, build partnerships with accreditation, assessment, technology and registrar offices, represent AIU in regional and international teaching networks, contribute to the WSCUC self-study, and teach one course per year if a joint appointment is agreed.

Required profile

• Doctoral degree (PhD or EdD) in education, instructional design, educational technology or a related field; strongly preferred for the administrative role.
• At least seven years of progressive higher education experience, including at least three years in a leadership role at a teaching and learning centre or equivalent.
• Demonstrated experience leading a CTL or similar unit in a GCC university context, designing faculty development programmes, and administering faculty development grants.
• Experience with SLO/PLO assessment in an accreditation context; WASC, AACSB or comparable framework experience is an advantage.
• Excellent English, and Arabic is an advantage.

Required skills

• Knowledge of evidence-based pedagogy, SoTL, and WSCUC accreditation standards (CFRs 2.3, 2.4, 2.5, 2.8, 2.9, 3.3).
• Proficiency with Canvas or an equivalent LMS as course designer and administrator.
• Programme management of several concurrent initiatives and the ability to influence culture without direct line authority.
