Hotel Accountant

About the role

A hotel is looking for an accountant to maintain accurate accounting records and support the finance team with month-end and year-end closing, reconciliations, financial statements and internal controls. The role covers day-to-day accounting, accounts payable and receivable, payroll entries and audit support.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain accurate accounting records and prepare journal entries, accruals, adjustments and other transactions.
• Perform monthly balance sheet and general ledger reconciliations and investigate discrepancies.
• Assist with month-end and year-end closing and prepare monthly financial statements and management reports.
• Monitor accounts payable and receivable, reconcile bank, credit card, cash and other accounts, and reconcile hotel revenues against system records.
• Support payroll entries, provisions and schedules; record prepaid expenses, accruals, deposits and fixed assets.
• Monitor departmental spending against budget and help prepare annual budgets and forecasts.
• Verify invoices, payment requests and purchase documentation, and coordinate with Purchasing, Receiving, Cost Control, Front Office, F&B and HR to resolve discrepancies.
• Prepare documents for internal and external audits and ensure compliance with internal controls and local laws.
• Keep financial documents secure, protect confidential information and report control weaknesses to the Finance Manager or Financial Controller.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce or a related field.
• Previous accounting or finance experience, preferably in the hotel or hospitality industry.
• Good understanding of accounting principles, reconciliations, financial controls and month-end closing.
• Good command of written and spoken English.

Required skills

• Good knowledge of Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
• Knowledge of hotel accounting systems (Opera, SunSystems, Materials Control or similar) is an advantage.
