Head of Pre-Prep (Early Years & Key Stage 1)
The English School · Kuwait City
Job description
About the role
The English School (TES), a non-profit, independent, co-educational British curriculum school in Kuwait, is seeking a Head of Pre-Prep to lead its Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Key Stage 1. The role works alongside the Principal and Deputy Heads, combining strategic planning, early childhood pedagogy, pupil admissions oversight and pastoral leadership. It is based in Kuwait City.
Key responsibilities
- Lead strategic planning for the Pre-Prep section, building a culture of academic ambition, emotional wellbeing and personal growth.
- Oversee EYFS and KS1 curriculum planning, progression, continuity and differentiation, and monitor teaching standards through lesson observations, planning reviews, work sampling, KS1 testing and data analysis.
- Assess prospective pupils with the Head of Admissions, ensure appropriate class placements and run smooth transition programmes for new children and families.
- Champion holistic early childhood development with the Deputy Head Pastoral and Head of Learning Support, overseeing pastoral mentoring, student leadership, assemblies and extra-curricular activities, and act as Phase Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead.
- Mentor teaching staff through CPD and performance reviews, help with recruitment and induction, and oversee daily cover planning and staff wellbeing.
- Coordinate phase resources, budgets and major supply orders, and manage logistics for events, performances, educational visits and term schedules.
- Act as a visible, approachable leader for families, approving correspondence and building trusting relationships.
Required profile
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an equivalent British-recognised teaching qualification, with specialisation in Early Years or Primary education; further leadership qualifications are desirable.
- Proven senior or middle leadership experience in a British independent pre-prep, primary or high-performing international school.
- Dedication to early childhood mental health, social-emotional wellbeing and safeguarding, ideally with a safeguarding or DDSL background.
Required skills
- Deep knowledge of the EYFS framework and Key Stage 1 curriculum, and of modern play-based and foundational learning strategies.
- Knowledge of KS1 assessment tracking and future-focused teaching practices.
- Exceptional communication skills and an approachable manner that builds trust with pupils, parents and staff.
Applicants apply through the school's application form, including a letter of application describing their leadership philosophy and vision for the Pre-Prep school. Candidates must be prepared for child protection screening, including checks with past employers and criminal record checks. The school notes that under current Kuwait regulations, female employees cannot sponsor dependents for residency.
