Medical Coding Officer

About the role

The Medical Coding Officer works in Patient Accounting Services and is responsible for coding discharged patient records. The role aims for 100% of records coded within the set timeline, 95% accuracy in principal diagnosis and procedure selection, timely escalation of uncoded records, resolution of documentation gaps with physicians and coders, and active support of daily Operating Theatre audits and infusion coding accuracy.

Key responsibilities

• Review medical records and assign diagnosis and procedure codes accurately.
• Select principal diagnoses and procedures and sequence all other codes correctly.
• Resolve inconsistent or missing documentation with physicians and coders.
• Support daily Operating Theatre audits and infusion coding.
• Escalate uncoded records, keep records complete and protect patient privacy.

Required profile

• Diploma or Bachelor's degree in healthcare or administration (preferred).
• 1-3 years' experience in medical coding or healthcare administration.
• Solid understanding of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology and diagnosis coding.
• Good command of spoken and written English.
• Values and ethics: integrity and discretion with patient information; continuous learning; initiative and teamwork across clinical and finance teams.

Required skills

• Familiarity with electronic medical record and billing systems.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
• Relevant coding certification such as CPC or CCS (an advantage).
