Librarian Assistant

About the role

The English School is looking for a full-time Librarian Assistant in Salmiya, reporting to the Librarian. The role supports the librarian in managing the library's day-to-day operations so that it remains a welcoming, orderly and inspiring place for students, staff and visitors.

Key responsibilities

• Catalogue new book additions in the Oliver resources database, including covering, labelling and colour-coding books and entering their details.
• Issue and return books for timetabled classes, and help pupils and teachers find topic books and class collections.
• Supervise student activities in the library during break times.
• Maintain shelf order, run regular stock checks and remove damaged or out-of-date books from the catalogue.
• Keep the library displays engaging and tidy, and cover administrative routines in the Librarian's absence.
• As part of the Library Committee, read new books to validate them for inclusion in stock, following Ministry of Education guidelines.
• Follow the school's Code of Conduct, dress code and safeguarding policies, and help maintain order and discipline while protecting pupils' health and safety.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree.
• Excellent written and spoken English.
• Highly organised with strong attention to detail, personable, patient and warm, and able to work directly with children.
• Passion for books and a commitment to promoting reading among pupils.
• Immediate start preferred; child protection screening is required.

Required skills

• Strong IT literacy with basic software such as Google Suite.
• Desirable: knowledge of library management systems (e.g. Oliver) or cataloguing methods such as the Dewey Decimal System.
• Desirable: experience in an educational setting and familiarity with children's literature.
