Mental Health Counsellor

About the role

American International University (AIU), a private institution in Kuwait founded in 2019, is hiring a Mental Health Counsellor in Jahra. The counsellor provides professional mental health counseling, crisis intervention, psychological support and wellbeing services to students, working with faculty, Student Affairs and external healthcare providers to promote student success and retention.

Key responsibilities

• Provide individual counseling for students facing emotional, psychological, behavioral, academic or personal challenges
• Conduct mental health assessments and develop counseling and support plans
• Provide crisis intervention and risk assessment for urgent mental health concerns
• Maintain confidential counseling records according to professional and legal standards
• Coordinate referrals to external mental health professionals, medical providers, emergency services and community resources
• Develop and run workshops, support groups, outreach programs and mental health awareness initiatives
• Collaborate with faculty, Student Affairs and university leadership on student wellbeing initiatives
• Take part in crisis response and student support teams, monitor mental health trends and contribute to wellbeing policies
• Prepare reports and utilization data while keeping student confidentiality

Required profile

• Master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Mental Health Counseling, Social Work or a related field (required)
• Professional counseling licensure, certification or eligibility for licensure preferred
• 3-5 years of counseling experience, preferably in higher education or a student-focused setting
• Experience in crisis intervention, mental health assessment and short-term counseling required
• Experience developing mental health education and prevention programs preferred
